Burley Oaks Primary School welcomed families, community members and local stakeholders to a special climate awareness event on Thursday, 17 September, hosted in partnership with Parents For Future.

The event featured a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing on the climate and nature crisis, presented by naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham. The film explored the latest evidence on climate change and highlighted practical actions that individuals, communities and organisations can take to protect the environment.

A highlight of the evening was a presentation by Burley Oak’s Sustainability Champions, who shared the school’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. The children also read a poem and showcased the initiatives they have helped introduce across the school, including refillable glue sticks, responsible printing practices, recycling, switching off lights, tree planting, active travel and outdoor learning through Forest School and Woodland Rangers activities.

The children spoke confidently about the importance of caring for our planet and demonstrated how everyone can play a part in creating positive environmental change. Their presentation highlighted both the progress already being made at Burley Oaks and their ambitions for the future.

The event was attended by local MP Anna Dixon and Councillor Lottie Kitching, who heard first-hand from pupils about environmental projects taking place in school and across the wider community.

Sustainability is an important part of life at Burley Oaks Primary School, helping children become informed, responsible citizens who understand the challenges facing the natural world and the actions needed to build a more sustainable future.
